Brother James Joseph Linscott, CSC, 77, of
the Midwest Province of the Brothers of the Holy Cross, was born
on April 14, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Raymond and
Margaret (Hogan) Linscott. He was preceded in death by his
parents. He is survived by two brothers, Robert of Florence,
Wis., and John of Simi, Calif.; and by a sister, Mary Elizabeth
Conarchy of Milwaukee.
Brother James received the habit of the
Brothers of the Holy Cross on Aug. 15, 1946, pronounced his first
vows on Feb. 2, 1948, and made his perpetual profession on Aug.
16, 1951.
His early life as a Brother of Holy Cross
was dedicated to secondary school education, both as a teacher
and as an administrator. He taught at Cathedral High School,
Indianapolis, Ind.; Reitz Memorial High School, Evansville, Ind.;
St. Joseph High School, South Bend, Ind.; and Holy Trinity High
School, Chicago, Ill. Brother James was the principal of St.
Joseph High School from 1963 to 1973. After a sabbatical period
in Cuernavaca, Mexico, from 1973 to 1974, Brother James devoted
six years working with orphans in Mexico. He returned to the
United States in 1980, and in 1981 he became the administrator of
Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Milford, Ind., and served the
Spanish-speaking community in the area. He returned to Notre Dame
in 1991 and lived at Columba Hall on the university campus until
his health required him to take up residence in Dujarie House,
the skilled-care center for the Brothers of Holy Cross in Holy
Cross Village, where he died peacefully on Friday evening, Oct.

Calling hours are from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 13, in St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross Village, at
Notre Dame. The funeral Mass will follow at 3 p.m., with burial
at St. Joseph Cemetery.
