Alex J. Leszcz Jr., 76, of Stocker
Place in South Bend, Ind., passed away unexpectedly at 11:24 pm
on Sunday, Feb. 11, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.
He was born to the late Alex J. Sr. and Josephine (Nowicki)
Leszcz on Feb. 25, 1924, in South Bend, and was a lifelong
resident. One sister, Dorothy Kwieran, also preceded him
in death. Mr. Leszcz retired in 1974 as a sergeant with the South
Bend Police Department following 25 years of service. After
retirement, he owned the Silver Dollar Saloon in South Bend from
1974 until 1986. Mr. Leszcz was a member of St. Stanislaus Parish
and the Fraternal Order of Police. He graduated from Central High
School in 1943, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
On June 22, 1946, he married Lorraine M. Paprocki
in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend. She survives along
with two daughters, Carol D. (Steven) McDaniel of South
Bend and Sandra K. (David) Fisher of Pleasanton, Calif.;
one son, Kenneth A. Leszcz of South Bend; seven grandchildren,
Paul M. Marvin, Robert E. McDaniel, Brian A. Marvin, Tracy
Fisher, Heather Fisher, Neil Fisher and Andrew Leszcz; one
great-grandson, Austin A. Marvin; two sisters, Evelyn Czuk
and Rita Strzelecki, both of South Bend; and by a brother,
John Leszcz of South Bend.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm today, Feb.
14, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South
Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 6 pm. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, in
St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St.
Joseph Polish Roman Catholic Cemetery. Alex enjoyed playing cards
with his friends, feeding every bird within the area, and was
known as "the candyman" for the neighborhood children.
