Herbert C. Leng, 95, residing in
Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada, formerly of South 33rd Street,
South Bend, passed away at 9:57 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2000,
in Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital, Perth, Ontario.
Mr. Leng was born December 16, 1904, in Havlock, Ontario, Canada,
as the son of William & Jessie Leng, and moved from Havlock
to South Bend in 1926. He then moved to Smiths Falls, Ontario,
Canada, in 1993 to live with his daughter. He served as barber
since 1928 in several downtown barber shops, eventually owning
Herb's Barber Shop in South Bend. He retired in 1974. On August
24, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, he married Ledolia B. Ellis.
She passed away on December 28, 1992. He is survived by his
daughter and son-in-law, Donna & Jim Copp of Smiths
Falls, Ontario; a son and daughter-in-law, James N. and Dee Leng
of Stevensville, Michigan; seven grandchildren and ten
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Evelyn Kennedy
of Havlock, Ontario, Marjorie Spalding of Toronto and
Beulah Smith of Havlock, Ontario; and a half sister, Beryl
Scott of Trenton, Ontario. While in South Bend, Mr. Leng
was a member of River Park United Methodist Church; the Barbers
Union, and the Moose Lodge #58, both for more than 50 years.
While in Smiths Falls, he was a member of First Baptist Church.
Services for Mr. Leng will be at 1:30 p.m.
Monday, November 20, in Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave.,
South Bend. Rev. Phil Abram, pastor of River Park United
Methodist Church, will officiate. Entombment will be in Highland
Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7- 9 p.m. Sunday
in the Palmer Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in Mr. Leng's
memory may be offered to the Sanctuary Improvement Fund of First
Baptist Church, Smiths Falls, Ontario; or to the charity of the
donor's choice.
