Brother Engelbert Leisse CSC

Brother Engelbert CSC, aged 84, oldest brother in the Congregation of Holy Cross and treasurer of the University of Notre Dame from 1934 to 1938, died in the community infirmary at Notre Dame at 6 p.m. Thursday.

 

He was born in Seidinhausen, Germany, July 31, 1858, as Bernard Leisse. He received the holy habit in 1880 and was professed in 1883. Funeral services will take place Saturday morning, the office of the dead at 8 o’clock and the reigum mass at 9, both in the Sacred Heart Church on the campus. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery at Notre Dame.

Brother Engelbert CSC, dean of the Holy Cross brothers in the United States, was buried in the Notre Dame Community Cemetery this morning after services in Sacred Heart Church at the University of Notre Dame. He was the oldest living brother in the congregation.

 

Born in Seldinhausen, Germany in 1858, as Bernard Leisse, he was for many years a teacher in parochial grammar and high schools in Covington, Ky., Fort Wayne, Ind., and New Orleans, La. Among his distinguished pupils was Most Rev. John F. Noll, D.D., bishop of Fort Wayne.

 

Superior of the brothers normal school at Notre Dame from 1898 to 1902, Brother Engelbert served as president of Holy Cross College, New Orleans, from 1912 to 1919, and again from 1927 to 1933. He served as purchasing agent at Notre Dame from 1920 to 1927, and afterwards as treasurer until his retirement four years ago. He died Thursday at Notre Dame.
