Brother John Lavelle CSC, 76, of Columba Hall, Notre Dame, died at 9:45 a.m Sunday in St. Joseph Medical Center of an apparent heart attack. He was born Apr. 14, 1911 in Indianapolis. He was chaplain of the Daughters of Isabella Circle 572. He is survived by two sisters, Nancy Lavelle and Florence Zimmer, both of Indianapolis.

 

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Chapel of Holy Cross Brothers Center and burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery there Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday in Columba Hall anf after 4:30 p.m. at the Brothers Center Chapel, where a wake will be conducted by members of the Daughters of Isabella Circle 572 at 7:30 p.m.

 

Brother Lavelle became a novice Feb. 1, 1947 and professed his vows on the Congregation of Holy Cross Feb. 2, 1948. He was a former bookkeeper and theater manager for Warner Brothers Syndicate Theaters in Wabash, Ind. He studied at St. Meinrad’s minor and major seminaries and received degrees from the University of Notre Dame and DePaul University. He served as director of Boysville, Clinton, Mich., and as a teacher at Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio; Hoban High School,  Dayton, Ohio; and Lemans Academy, Rollin Prairie. He was director of vocations, Brothers Center and a Columba Hall staff member.
