Manufacturer Victim of Rail Accident
Vice-President and Manager of South Bend Dowel Works Will be
Buried Friday. Charles E. Kuntz, vice-president and general
manager of the South Bend Dowel works, died at Epworth hospital
last night at 11:04 o'clock. The funeral will be held
Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at 1622 South Michigan street, the
residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kuntz, parents of the deceased
and will be under Masonic auspices, South Bend lodge No. 294, F.
& A.M. of which Mr. Kuntz was a member, being in charge. The
officiating clergyman will be Rev. Frank Briggs of Levanon, Ind.
Burial will be in Riverview cemetery. Friends may view the
body Friday morning. The death of Mr. Kuntz was due to an
accident which occurred last Thursday night at the Leer street
crossing of the New York Central railroad. Returning from
his farm in an automobile truck he was struck by a New York
Central mail train and hurled a distance of 59 feet, sustaining
fractures of both legs, left arm, nose, and pelvic bone. He also
suffered internal and a scalp wound. Despite the servious nature
of the injuries, it was believed that Mr. Kuntz had an excellent
chance of recovery but following an operation made necessary by
the internal injuries, pneumonia set in and it was realized
Tuesday morning that his chances of recovery were slight. The
death of Mr. Kuntz removes from the community one of the younger
and most progressive of its industrial leaders, he having been
regarded as a man of exceptional ability along mechanical and
industrial lines, evidence of this fact being illustrated by the
rapid growth of the manufacturing instution which he directed.
Mr. Kuntz was 35 years old, his birth taking place at Lakeville
May 26, 1887. He was, however, a resident of South Bend for 34
years, his home being at 1622 South Main street. His
marriage to Miss Edna Pearl Evans, who, with two children, Mary
Jane, age seven and Carey Belle, age five, survive him, took
place June 3, 1915, with Rev. Mr. Briggs as minister. Besides his
parents and immediate family, his is survived by two brothers,
Thurman E. Kuntz and Robert M. Kuntz, and a sister, Miss Carey
Belle Kuntz. His fraternal activites were limited to the
Masonic order in which he was an active member, his affiliations
being with South Bend lodge No. 294, F. & A.M; South Bend
chapter, No. 29, R.A.M.; South Bend council, No. 32, R. &
S.M; Scotish riet consistory; Valley of Fort Wayne; Mizpah
shrine, Fort Wayne; and Avalon grotto, No. 48, M.O.V.P.E.R., of
this city. Members of South Bend lodge will meet at the
Masonic temple at 1:30 o'clock and proceed to the Kuntz residence
in automobiles. Source: South Bend Tribune, November
