Four Years; Husband Quits Tourney.
Mrs. Esther A. Kroll, wife of South Bend golfer Walter Kroll, a
leading contender for the qualifying medal in the Indiana Amateur
Golf tournament being held here this week, died in St. Joseph
Hospital at 5:22 p.m. Tuesday. Kroll was called to his
wifes bedside shortly before her death after he completed
nine holes of play at the Morris Park golf course. His wife had
insisted he play in the tournament even though she was seriously
ill. Mrs. Kroll had been suffering from a lingering
illness for the last four years. She was 41. Kroll, a
former city champion, withdrew from the golf tournament.
Born in South Bend on Oct. 23, 1916, Mrs. Kroll was married Dec.
2, 1939, in Bryan, O. She was the former Esther Reiter.
Three Children Survive. Surviving besides the husband are
her mother, Mrs. Agnes Reiter of South Bend; a daughter, Rebecca,
and two sons, Walter Jr. and Frederick, all at home; five
sisters, Mrs. Irene McFarren, Miss Henrietta Reiter, Mrs. Harriet
Podemski, Mrs. Genevieve Crothers and Mrs. Loretta Ritchard, and
two brothers, Julius and Joseph Reiter, all of South Bend.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday in the St. Joseph Funeral
Home. Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Matthews
Catholic Church, Rev. Arnold J. Wibbert, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Polish Cemetery. The
rosary will be recited in the funeral home at 8 p.m. Friday.
