DROWNS IN ASH
PIT
Floating Oil Can
Brings Workers Attention to Absence
Martin Kristl, 39
years old, 521 Sherman Avenue, was drowned Monday afternoon at 4
o'clock while working at the Indiana & Michigan Electric
plant on East Colfax Avenue. Kristl was greasing the
machinery which conveys the ashes to the ash pit, necessitating
his standing directly over the pit. He lost his hold and
feel into the pit which contained about eight feet of water.
The accident was
first discovered when fellow workmen saw his oil can floating on
the water. Hooks were procured and the body brought to the
surface after which the electric company employees and the police
worked with the lungmotor but without result. He was in the
water, according to reports, for about fifteen minutes before
being taken out.
Kristl was born
in Germany and came to America with his parents when but a year
old. He was married to Miss Lillio Schafer in 1905 and is
survived by his wife and three children. He also leaves his
father, mother, two sisters an two brothers, all of South Bend.
Funeral services
will be held Thursday at 2pm from the residence, Rev. Clifford C.
Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
