SOUTH BEND - Dorothy M. Kowalewski, 90, passed away on
Monday, May 19, at 7:48 p.m. in her home. Dorothy was born on
January 7, 1918, to the late Vincent and Sadie (Szmanda) Zielinski.
On May 14, 1958, she married John J. Kowalewski, who preceded her
in death on September 28, 1996. She was also preceded in death by
a grandson, Todd Kowalewski, on January 25, 1970. She is survived
by her son, David (Carol) Kowalewski of South Bend; a grandson,
Michael (Lori) Kowalewski; three step-grandchildren, Maria (John)
Montgomery, Tracy Cuthbert and Valery (Cory)
Bagarus; three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Rebeca and Andrew;
five step-great-grandchildren, Olivia, Victoria, James, Julius
and Cora; three sisters-in-law, Florence Bilinski,
Virginia Wantuck and Jean Kowalewski of Warrenton, VA; and
a brother-in-law, Raymond Kowalewski. She is also survived by
many cousins, nephews, her good friends, and by her two little
neighbors, Kelleigh and Bryar Gardner, who called her grandma.
Dorothy went to Woodrow Wilson School for her first grade then to
Lydick School. She graduated from New Carlisle High School in
1937. She worked for Bendix Products for 20 years and retired on
January 30, 1974. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka
Church and Bendix Local #9. She loved to work in her garden,
working in her flowers, and loved to work on crafts and puzzles.
She was a devoted mom, grandma, and great-grandma. The family
would like to extend a special thank you to the Center for
Hospice and Palliative Care.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on
Thursday, May 22, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower
Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 23,
in St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church. Burial will follow at
St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court,
South Bend, IN 46637.
