SOUTH BEND - Steven Kovacs Sr., 86, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2008, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born on January 18, 1922, in Csorna, Hungary, to Steve and Maria (Saltzer) Kovacs, and immigrated to the United States in October 1956. On July 8, 1943, in Hungary, he married Elizabeth Szarka, who survives. Mr. Kovacs retired from South Bend Range in 1984. Along with his wife, Elizabeth Kovacs of South Bend, he is survived by two sons, Zoltan (Judy) Kovacs of South Bend and Louie (Teri) Kovacs of Niles; grandchildren, Steven Kovacs III, David Kovacs, Heidi Kovacs, Kristi Kovacs, James Gaddey, William Gaddey and Kristi Swiger; great-grandchildren, Joshua Kovacs, Taylor Kovacs and Lawson Swiger; and three sisters, Elizabeth Nemeth of South Bend, and two sisters in Hungary. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Anna Kovacs. His son, Steven Kovacs Jr., died later on Monday, July 14, 2008.

Private services will take place. Contributions in memory of Steven Kovacs Sr. may be made to Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
