Stephen E. Kompar (March 21, 1910 - July
16, 2003)
Stephen E. Kompar, 93, of North
Hawthorne Drive, South Bend, Ind., died Wednesday, July 16, in
his sister's home.
Mr. Kompar, a lifetime resident of South
Bend, was born March 21, 1910, in South Bend, to the late Steven
and Mary (Sabo) Kompar. Mr. Kompar was preceded in death by his
sister, Mary Kompar (Farkas) of Ann Arbor, Mich., and by a
son, Morgan "Mike" Roy Kompar, who also preceded his
father in death. Mike's widow is Sandra of Dayton, Ohio. A
younger sister, Olga Kompar (Seidl), resides in South Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie F. Homan,
married June 26, 1942; a daughter, Karen K. Steinbauer of
Granger, Ind.; and a son, Robert B. Kompar of Covington, Ga. Mr.
Kompar has eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In January 1976, Mr. Kompar retired after
44 years of service as vice president and trust officer for the
First Bank & Trust Company, downtown South Bend. Mr. Kompar
received his Indiana real estate brokers license on April 30,
1958. A 48-year member of Morris Park Country Club, a life member
(63 years) and past treasurer of the Elks Lodge No. 235, and was
a life member of American Legion Post 303. Mr. Kompar was a World
War II veteran, serving three years in the Army Air Force, Tactical
Air Center, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 18, 1945.
In 1966 Mr. Kompar served on the South
Bend Redevelopment Commission appointed by then-mayor of South
Bend, Lloyd M. Allen. Mr. Kompar was active in the St. Joseph
County Republican Party, serving as treasurer under three county
chairmen, and also served as vice chairman of the 3rd Republican
congressional district. Mr. Kompar received the Sagamore of the Wabash
award from Governor Otis R. Bowen, M.D., on Aug. 30, 1977, for
his work with the Indiana State Republican Party.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.
Saturday, July 19, in the Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E, Jefferson
Blvd., South Bend, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m.
Friday. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
