Sister M. Odelia, CSC, died on Sunday, Jan. 30, in Saint Mary's Convent, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister M. Odelia (Gertrude Barbara Koenig) was born on May 23, 1915, to the late Paul and Mary Lehman Koenig, in Red Rock, Texas.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at Saint Mary's Notre Dame, Ind., on June 12, 1934, from Austin, Texas and made her final profession in the congregation on Aug. 15, 1940. Sister M. Odelia is survived by her sisters, Agnes Koenig of Austin, Texas, Ida Ranly of Greenville, Texas and Mary of Leander, Texas.
Sister M. Odelia began her teaching career teaching in elementary schools from 1937 until 1957 when she moved into secondary schools. Sister taught in Lancaster, Pa., Washington D.C., Baltimore, Md., Alexandria, Va., and Marshall, McAllen, Austin and Richardson, Texas. In Austin and Richardson, Sister was librarian in the elementary schools. She received her Master's Degree in Library science in 1969. Sister Odelia moved to Rosary Hall, Saint Mary's in 1989, where she ministered in community service and then to Saint Mary's Convent in 1992 as a patient, and participated in the Apostolate of Prayer until her death.
Wake services will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, followed by interment at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's Notre Dame.
