MISHAWAKA - Lewis P. Kobold Sr., 87, of Mishawaka, passed away
Sunday evening, December 27, 2009, in Golden Living Center,
Mishawaka. Lewis was born March 2, 1922, in Woodland, a son of
the late Paul and Harriet (Felton) Kobold. He grew up in
Woodland. From 1942 - 1946, Lewis served his country in the U.S.
Army during World War II and was in the Battle of the Bulge for
which he was highly decorated. On November 28, 1946, Lewis
married Dorothy R. Loucas, and the couple made Mishawaka their
home. Lewis was employed as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal
Service for 34 years. Following retirement, he worked for 13
years as a hall guide at Mishawaka High School. Lewis was a
member and served as an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Mishawaka. He was a member of the Mishawaka Lions Club and the
Wyatt Conservation Club. Lewis volunteered as an assistant
football coach at St. Joseph Grade School as well as with the
East End Little League. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting
and his hunting dogs. He was known for his huge vegetable garden
which he shared with everyone. He liked replanting trees. Lewis
and Dorothy enjoyed camping in the summer at Weko Beach on Lake
Michigan with their children, grandchildren and friends. Lewis'
surviving family includes his devoted wife of 63 years, Dorothy;
five children, Suzanne (Michael) Dunkelberger, Mary (Gary)
Amacher, Lewis Paul (Marcia) Kobold, Mark (Teresa) Kobold and
Steven (Mary Ellen) Kobold; 11 grandchildren, Shellyanne, Scott,
Jennifer, David, Patrick, Kyle, Loucas, Kaitlin, Kevin, Matthew
and Megan; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Devon (Elsie)
Kobold; a sister, Mary Kobold; and a sister-in-law and
brother-in-law, Edward and Catherine Baer. Lewis was preceded in
death by an infant daughter, Jessica Kobold; six brothers,
Woodrow, Elmer, Oscar, Otho, Carl and Darwin Kobold; and two
sisters, Fern Boone and Leona Lechlitner. There will be no public
visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday
at 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 South Mill
Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Burial
with military honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, 2300
West Sixth Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544. Arrangements are in the
care of Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 West
Third Street, Mishawaka.
