-- 01/19/2005
Carl
Eugene Kobold, 81, of Arkansas, formerly of South Bend and Syracuse, passed away
on January 19, 2005, in Brighton House Care Center in
Arkansas.
Carl
was born September 13, 1923, in Woodland, Indiana, to Paul H. & Harriet
(FELTON) KOBOLD. Carl was one of 11 children. Carl's parents were
members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Woodland, and he was baptized and
confirmed there. Carl's early days of school were in a one room school in
Woodland.
He
worked for some time as a carpenter with home builders in the area, and he and
his brother Elmer had a construction company. He later worked for
Studebaker in South Bend. It was wartime and he entered the Army and was
assigned to the 43nd Engineering Division.
Carl
more than served his country; his division served in France and Germany and the
takeover of Czechoslovakia. From there Carl was assigned to a battleship
headed for Japan. In fact, he was on the battleship in Tokyo Bay awaiting
the invasion of Japan when the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. Within three months he was home and back to work at Studebaker
where his job was still waiting for him.
Carl
and Arlene ANDERSON were married October 9, 1949. Together for 52 years,
they celebrated their anniversary. Arlene passed away December 23,
2001.
Carl
& Arlene together operated a neighborhood grocery store in South Bend.
They also worked together at Stanley CLARK School in South Bend for 22 years,
retiring in 1987.
They
moved to Syracuse where they built a beautiful home near Dewart Lake, complete
with a greenhouse.
Carl
enjoyed watching sports and especially golf on TV. He also enjoyed card games
and bingo. But flowers were most enjoyed by him.
Carl's
surviving family includes daughters, Carol (Mike) CAMPER of California; and
Doris (John) BOWERMAN of Arkansas; brothers Lewis (Dottie) KOBOLD of Mishawaka;
and Devon (Elsi) KOBOLD of Elkhart; a sister, Mary KOBOLD of Mishawaka; eight
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and by a sister-in-law, Cheryl KOBOLD
of Tennessee.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Fred; two granddaughters, Shelby
and Rochelle; and brothers, Elmer; Oscar; Woodrow; Otho and Darwin; and two
sisters, Leona & Fern.
Carl
was most a most loving & caring person to family & friends. He deeply
loved his church and his work in the church, and was appreciated by the church
members.
Funeral
services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Emmaus Lutheran Church, with
Pastor Don STUCKWHISCH and Pastor Karl BRENNER of St. Paul's Lutheran Church
officiating. Committal rites will be at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may
call in Bubb Funeral Chapel North.
Memorial
contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, to Emmaus Lutheran
Church or to St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Woodland.
