W. Maxwell ''Max'' Knoop, 67, of
Woodmont Drive, passed away unexpectedly at 7:30 p.m. on Friday,
Sept. 10, in the emergency room at Memorial Hospital after
collapsing in his yard at home of an apparent heart attack. Mr.
Knoop was born on July 6, 1932, in Hartford City, Ind., to the
late Jessie (Maxwell) and Walter Edward Knoop. He moved to
South Bend, Ind., in 1946 from Hartford City.
On Dec. 28, 1953, in South Bend, he married
Joanne (Green) Knoop, who survives. Their son, John M.
Knoop of Hillsborough, and their grandchildren, Kara C. Knoop and
Andrew M. Knoop, both of Livingston, N.J., also survive, along
with his sister, Marye E. Knoop of Elwood, Ind.
Max retired in 1992 after a 40-year career
in the life insurance industry, the last 20 years was with the
Tower Insurance Agency and, prior to that, he was with the Aetna
Life and Casualty Company. He was a 1950 graduate of Riley High
School, and a 1954 graduate of Northwestern University where he
was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was a member and
past president of the North Central Chapter of the Chartered Life
Underwriters and the South Bend Life Underwriters. Max was a past
president of the South Bend Country Club, and was an Army veteran
of the Korean War era.
Services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.
14, in the McGann Funeral Homes, University Area Chapel, 2313 E.
Edison Road, where friends may call between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on
Tuesday. Rev. John Parks, a cousin of Mr. Knoop, will officiate.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger,
Ind. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart
Association or to the charity of donor's choice.
