Edith M. Kline

SOUTH BEND, IN — Edith M. (Sunderland) Kline, 95, of South Ironwood Drive, passed away after an illness at 6:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the Saint Joseph Medical Center. Mrs. Kline was born on May 12, 1906, in Eureka, Utah, to the late George and Ellen (Boyd) Sunderland, and moved to South Bend, Ind., from Eureka 70 years ago, in the early 1930s.

 

On June 3, 1924, in Eureka, she married Prof. C.J. "Jake" Kline, who passed away in October 1989. Jake was a professor and longtime baseball coach at the University of Notre Dame.

Edith's efforts went into making a wonderful home for her family. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, the Christ Child Society and the Ladies of Notre Dame. She was an avid bridge player.

 

Mrs. Kline is survived by her children, Carol Martin of Baltimore, Md., Shirley Paris of Thousand, Oaks, Calif., Mary Ellen "Mardi" Spraul of St. Louis, Mo., Joseph V. (Mary Ann) Kline of Kalamazoo, Mich., and David A. (Danielle) Kline of South Bend; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and by a brother, Jarold Sunderland of American Fork, Utah.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 30, in the McGann Funeral Home, University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road near Ironwood.

 

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, corner of Hill and LaSalle. Rev. Charles Lavely, CSC, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.
