Sister M. Margaret Michael (Margaret King) CSC, died on Sunday, Sept. 3, in Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister M. Margaret Michael was born on March 8, 1933, in Mullagh, County Clare, Ireland, to the late Michael King and Margaret Devitt King.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1955, made her first profession in 1957, and her final profession in 1960. Sister worked at Stouffer's Restaurant in Chicago, Ill, before entering the Congregation. She received her Bachelor degree in elementary education from Saint Mary's College and her masters degree from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. She taught, from 1957 to 1967 at Sacred Heart, Fort Wayne, Ind., Saint Patrick's, East Chicago, Ill., Saint Paul's, Valparaiso, Ind., and Saint Vincent's, Logansport, Ind.
She was principal of Saint Patrick's, South Bend, 1967-1972, and principal of Saint Theodore's, Chicago, 1972 - 1975. Sister was elected Midwestern Regional Superior and served from 1975-1981. She was Director of Campus Ministry at Chicago State University, Chicago, 1982-1984. Sister was again chosen to be Midwestern Regional Superior and held that office from 1984-1987. She was active in the Pastoral Care Services, Saint Joseph's Residential Services of South Bend. Sister's major love was education. She was Regional Chairperson, Chicago Archdiocesan Principals' Association; Chairperson, South Bend Area Principals Association; a member of NCEA and on the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocesan Board of Education.
Sister received the Mayoral Award for Civic Involvement, City of South Bend and Saint Mary's College Alumnae Association Outstanding Service Commendation. She was a member of Saint Joseph's Care Group Board of Trustees; Saint Joseph's Medical Center Board of Trustee's, South Bend; Holy Cross Health System Board of Directors, South Bend, Chairperson, Major Superiors of Indiana; Board of Regents, Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, and Saint John's Medical Center Board of Trustees, Anderson, Ind.
Sister Margaret Michael served as a member of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocesan Campus Ministry group and was active in campus ministry at Indiana University South Bend, Bethel College and Goshen College, 1990-1996. In 1996 she was chosen to the Superior of Lourdes Convent, Saint May's Notre Dame. She held this position until her death.
Sister M. Margaret Michael is survived by her family, Patrick (Helen) King, Mary (James) Brennan, Teresa (Eamonn) Duffy, Michael (Rose) King and John (Ellen) King of Chicago; Nora (the late Thomas) Nagle, Thomas (Peggy) King and Anne (Sean) Healy of Ireland; and the late Bridget (Michael) Lally of London, England; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Wake services will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept 6, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, followed by interment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
