Hayes S. King

Jan. 21, 1920- Nov. 30, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Hayes Sidney King, fondly known as Sid King to family and friends, was born on January 21, 1920 in Fairbank, Iowa. He died on November 30 at Hospice of Arizona in Sun City West, Arizona after emergency surgery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Blanche and Orin King, his only brother, William King and his first wife, Marilyn. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Roberta Uible-King, his daughters, Sara Lennox of Massachusetts, Rev. Cynthia Park (Murray) of England and Judy Liszewski (Mark) of South Bend. He also is survived by three grandchildren, Jonathan Lennox of New Jersey, Sally Calland (Brett) of Wanatah, Andy Liszewski (Courtney) of South Bend and two great grandchildren. Sid grew up in Fairbank, Iowa and distinguished himself at his small high school as a musician and scholar and then went to Cornell College, in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. At Cornell he met his first wife, Marilyn Ingham and they married in 1942. Sid served as an officer in the Navy and at the end of the war he took up high school teaching in Michigan. School teaching soon gave way to a more exciting life as an agent with the FBI. His final posting with the FBI was South Bend and he lived here until he took early retirement in 1972. One of the reasons he took early retirement was a tragic accident that left his wife, Marilyn a quadriplegic. The two of them started the local chapter of the National Paraplegic Foundation and were instrumental in making South Bend friendly for those in wheelchairs. Sid became his wife's fulltime caregiver and the two of them traveled all over the country in various trailers until they took up full time residence in Mesa, Arizona in 1974. Sid and Marilyn volunteered at the East Mesa Senior Center where Roberta Uible was the director. Marilyn died in 1981 and the kindness expressed by Roberta to Sid soon blossomed into a deep affection that led to their marriage in 1983. They spent many years helping the senior citizens of Mesa as well as those in Phoenix, and Sun City West. When Sid and Roberta weren't working, they rode a side-by-side tandem bike, traveled to forty-nine of the fifty states, cruised Scandinavia, and visited The Parthenon and the Pyramids. Sid's health began to fail about a year ago. His final operation was too much for his many years. He went into Hospice and this is where the four women in his life prepared him for his journey with singing, praying and reminiscing. Sid's long and wonderful life was celebrated on Sunday, December 6 at the Interfaith Community Care's Birt's Bistro with music, prayer, laughter and his favorite meal: dessert! If you wish to remember Sid, please send contributions to Interfaith Community Care, P.O.
