SOUTH BEND - Rev. Richard J. Kennedy, CSC, 84, died Friday at Holy Cross House, University of Notre Dame, after an illness. Father Kennedy entered the Novitiate of the Congregation of Holy Cross on Aug. 15, 1934, at Rolling Prairie. He made his perpetual profession on Aug. 16, 1938, at Notre Dame.
On May 28, 1942, he was ordained a priest in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C. From 1942 to 1964, he served on the Mission Band, where he was the Superior of the Mission Band at Notre Dame from 1961 to 1964.
He was pastor of St. Patrick's Parish from 1964 to 1975. He was the founder of Faith, Hope and Charity Chapel, retiring in 1988. He lived at Corby Hall on the Notre Dame campus until he moved to Holy Cross House in 1990. He was an honorary member of Roseland Rotary Club.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Basilica. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Moreau Seminary, where a wake service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
