Ruth Eileen Meaders Kelly

SOUTH BEND - Ruth Eileen Meaders Kelly, 87, died Sunday, May 11th, in Largo, Florida. Ruth was born February 18, 1921, in Phillips, Nebraska. She went to Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska. After graduation she taught in a "one-room" school for two years before joining the Women's Army Corps (WACs) during World War II. During 1942 and 1943, Ruth was a chemical warfare officer.

 

In 1943 she married Edward Kelly and they had four children. They eventually moved to South Bend, Indiana, where Ruth began working for the Notre Dame Credit Union. Ruth worked at the credit union for 25 years, eventually becoming its president until her retirement in 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, who passed away in August 2002. She is survived by her four children, Edward Kelly of Joplin, Missouri, Pat Kelly of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, Brigitte Eileen Kelly of Austin, Texas, and Kathleen Jorgensen of Chatham, Illinois. She also had 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

 

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the Notre Dame campus. Veterans Funeral Care, Clearwater, FL, is handling arrangements.
