MOTHER CYRIACA DIES AT AGE 81

Illness Ends 64-Year Service as Sister of Holy Cross

 

Mother M. Cyriaca, CSC, aged 81, for 64 years a member of the congregation of Sisters of the Holy Cross and a former mother superior and general stewardess at St Mary’s College here, died at 6:20am today in the college convent.  Death was caused by coronary thrombosis.

 

Mother M. Cyriaca was born Mary Keating in Lafayette IN, October 14, 1859.  She was clothed with the holy habit of the Sisters of the Holy Cross December 8, 1877, and was professed August 15, 1880.  She spent her 64 years of religious life as a teacher and superior in three missions, the Holy Angela Academy at Logansport IN; St Cecelia’s Academy at Washington D.C. and St Mary’s.  Her name is widely revered for her activities in charities.  She observed the diamond jubilee of her profession August 15, 1940.

 

Mother M. Cyriaca was exempted from active service in 1926 when she suffered a fractured hip.  Despite that handicap she maintained a lively interest is all that concerned the activities of the congregation.  Until last year she devoted much time to stamp collecting.

 

A nephew, Rev. Joseph C. Keating, of Crawfordsville IN, spent the last few days with her and will officiate in funeral services.  Arrangements for them are not complete.
