Sister M. Malachy Kearney, CSC

SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Malachy, CSC, (Lauretta Kearney), 81, was born in Los Angeles, CA, to the late Henry Joseph Kearney and Elizabeth Coyle Kearney. She was the second oldest of their six children. Sister has been predeceased by her sisters, Rosalyn and Virginia; and a brother, Henry and Carol Kearney. She is survived by her brother, John Kearny, and sister, Mary Ann (Fred) Curcio, both of California. Sister is survived by her brother-in-law, Jeff (Virginia) Poor of California. She is survived by nephews, Fred Curcio, Rev. Jack Kearney, Richard Kearney, Dennis Poor, Dan Poor, Michael Kearney, John and Andrew Schaefer, all of California, Mark Kearney of Virginia and William Schafer of New York; and nieces, Janie Akstens of Ohio and Paula Weil of California. Sister is also survived by many friends.

 

Sister Lauretta taught 30 years in junior high. She received a master's degree in counseling and psychology from Chapman College in Seattle, WA, 1979, and moved from the classroom to ministry to the aging, elder programs and mental health counseling in Auburn, Olympia and Bremerton, WA. Sister retired to Saint Mary's in 1997 and was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Reception and wake will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
