Johanna Katz, 90, of St. Paul's Retirement Community died following an illness at 11:12 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, in St. Paul's Health Care. Mrs. Katz was born on Oct. 29, 1907, in Buchanan, Mich., to Sigmund and Rena Desenberg and was a lifetime Michiana resident.
On Nov. 1, 1941 in Buchanan, she married Julius Katz, who preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1997. She is survived by two nieces, Rene Binzer of New York City and Colette Rivier of Villeneuve sur Lot France; and by two nephews, John Desenberg of Huntington Woods, Mich., and Dr. Milton Strauss of Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Katz was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha Desenberg Binzer; a brother, Harold Desenberg; and by a nephew, Herbert Binzer. Mrs. Katz had been a teacher for many years. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan and had been a member of Temple Beth-El, South Bend Kiwanis Club Auxiliary, and St. Joseph Medical Center Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the Portage Chapel of Riverview Cemetery with Rabbi Morley Feinstein officiating. Entombment will follow. There will be no visitation.
