MISHAWAKA - Richard O. Kanouse, 89, passed away Friday,
February 29, 2008, at 7:50 PM in his home with his family at his
side. Richard was born on August 17, 1918, in South Bend, as the
son of Orville Carrie (Partridge) Kanouse.
On February 11, 1938, in South Bend, he
married the former Doris Wiltfong, who preceded him in
death on June 10, 2007. Surviving Richard are his daughter, Pat
(Jerry) Whitfield of Mishawaka; four grandchildren, Mark Young
of Mishawaka, Chris Young of Dumfries, VA, Kelli Whitfield of
Mishawaka and Matthew Young of Mishawaka; a sister, Margaret Wood
of Mishawaka; and a brother, Eugene (Martha) Kanouse of
Mishawaka.
Richard was a veteran of the United States
Army Air Corps where he served his country from September 4,
1942, until he was honorably discharged on December 12, 1945. He
received an American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater
Ribbon with one bronze star, a Good Conduct Ribbon and Victory
Medal World War II. After returning home from the war he opened
the Kanouse Service Station at the corner of Logan and 8th
Street, Mishawaka, where he worked until he retired in 1981. He
was a life member of VFW Post #360, Mishawaka, and American
Legion Post 161 in Mishawaka.
At Richard's request, there will be no
visitation or services. Memorial contributions may be made in his
name to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111
Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the VFW National
Home for Children, 3573 S. Waverly Road, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827.
The Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, has been
entrusted with arrangements.
