Edwin A. Kalczynski, 86, of Colfax Ave., passed away on Monday, Jan. 25, in his residence. He was born on April 30, 1912 in South Bend, Ind., to George W.J. and Mary (Grzesk) Kalczynski, and was a lifelong resident.
He was a journalist and editor of ''Goniec Polski'' (Polish Messenger) from 1954-1964.
Mr. Kalczynski was also a public servant. He was elected to the office of St. Joseph County Recorder from 1965-1972, Deputy St. Joseph County Clerk from 1973-1984, and Bailiff, St. Joseph County Probate Court from 1985-1990.
He is survived by a sister, Angela L. Caenepeel of South Bend, Ind.; a brother, Daniel F. Kalczynski of New York City, N.Y.; and a nephew, David Caenepeel of Mishawaka, Ind.
Mr. Kalczynski was a graduate of St. Hedwig Elementary School, South Bend Central High School, and attended the University of Notre Dame.
He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 553; Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; M.R. Falcons, Nest 4 PFA; the Chopin Fine Arts Club and the West Side Democratic and Civic Club. He was a charter and founding member of the Achievement Forum, where he received the ''Achiever of the Year Award''. He was also a member of the Legion of Honor Polish Falcons of America, Polish National Alliance Lodge 83; Z.B. Falcons Conservation Club; Kosciuszko Foundation, New York, N.Y.; American Association of Retired Persons; Retired Indiana Public Employees Association and St. Hedwig Parish and Holy Name Society.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Polish Roman Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive,South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Legion of Honor service.
