Mrs. Lessie Jones, 86, beloved mother
and grandmother, who resided on Rockne Drive, South Bend, Ind.,
passed away following a brief illness at 4:20 p.m. on Thursday,
Oct. 15, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. On Jan. 14, 1912, she
was born in Phillips, Miss., to the union of Calvin and Rosetta (Walton)
Walker. In 1926, she was united in holy matrimony to Tom
Jones in Greenwood, Miss., who later preceded her in death in
1964. Coming from Greenwood, in 1945, she moved to South Bend.
She was a former member of the Greater Friendship Missionary
Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board and choir.
She retired from the University of Notre Dame in 1973 after seven
years of employment as a cook. She is survived by her son, Calvin
Jones of Senatobia, Miss.; eight grandchildren, Charlene Penister,
Barbara Medina, James Anderson and Steve Anderson,
all of South Bend, Charles Anderson, Jr., Calvin Jones, Jr.,
Pamela Jones and Monica Jones, all of Chicago, Ill.; 21
great-grandchildren; 23 great-great- grandchildren; along with a
host of other relatives and friends. "We will all miss our
matriarch a great deal and she will forever be in our
hearts." One daughter, Rosetta Williams preceded her in
death along with three grandchildren. "For the wages of sin
is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus
Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on
Tuesday at Alford's Mortuary with burial following at Chapel Hill
Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. Friends may call one hour prior
to service time. Alford's Mortuary is in charge of handling
arrangements.
