SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Bertha Johnson, CSC, 93, of Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent, died at 7:48 a.m. Friday in her residence after an illness. She was born Emily Johnson on Aug. 18, 1901, in New York City.

She entered the Congregation of Sisters of the Holy Cross, Saint Mary's, on Oct. 31, 1920; was received as a novice on Aug. 15, 1921; and professed her vows on Aug. 15, 1923. She was assigned to teaching in elementary schools in Illinois, New York, Idaho, Utah and California. She came to Saint Mary's Convent in 1978 and Our Lady of Holy Cross on May 19, 1994.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 p.m. Sunday in the church, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m.  Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
