Lester F. Johnson, 93, of St. Paul's
Retirement Community, died at 2:27 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at
St. Paul's. He was born on May 14, 1905, in Lakeville, Ind., to
Leona (Logan) and Arthur Johnson, who both preceded him in
death. Mr. Johnson was a graduate of South Bend Central High
School. On Dec. 28, 1938, in South Bend, Ind., he married Naomi
"Peg" Propes, who survives. He is also survived
by a daughter, Karen Lynn Corwin of Mishawaka, Ind.; two
granddaughters, Kristin Lynn Gring of South Bend and Susan
Renee Corwin of Mishawaka; a great-grandson, Mitchell Connor
Gring of South Bend; and by a brother, Chester G. Johnson of
South Bend. Mr. Johnson was the owner of the former South Bend
Lunch Restaurant. He was a member of the First Christian Church,
South Bend, where he was a former deacon and chairman of the
property committee. He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge No. 45 F
& AM, where he served as Tyler for over 50 years; the
Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend where he served as member of
the Orak Shrine Temple; and the South Bend Shrine Club.
A Masonic service for Mr. Johnson will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 North William Street, followed by a memorial service to be conducted by Dr. William J. Wassner of the First Christian Church, South Bend. Friends may call from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. Mr. Johnson's body has been donated to the Indiana University Medical Center Anatomical Education Program in Indianapolis, Ind. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Christian Church, 1101 East Jefferson, South Bend, IN 46617; to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2211 North Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60707; or to the Indiana Masonic Home Foundation, Inc., 525 N. Illinois Street, P.O. Box 44210, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
