SOUTH BEND - Mr. Ronald August Joers, 86, of South Bend,
passed away in his home on Sunday, August 31, 2008, after a
courageous battle with cancer. Ronald was born July 3, 1922, in
Porter County, IN, to the late Louis H. and Bertha (Irk)
Joers. He is survived by his three children, all of South Bend,
IN, Cynthia Melanson, Robert Joers and Christine Kowalewski;
five grandchildren, Kristin, Patrick and Michael Kowalewski,
Connor and Hunter Melanson; a twin brother, Arnold (Carolyn)
Joers of South Bend; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Joers of Concord,
MI; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Ronald was preceded in
death by his parents, Louis and Bertha Joers; sisters, Ruby Sherrick
and Lovella Forsyth; a brother, Gilbert Joers; son-in-law,
Kenneth Melanson; and his former wife, Carol Ann (Booth)
Joers. Ronald graduated from Issac C. Elson High School, Michigan
City, and Indiana University, Bloomington. While in high school
he, along with his twin brother Arnold, were on the high school
State Championship golf team. At Indiana University he
participated on the golf team, was a member of Kappa Sigma
fraternity and Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. He was the
owner of the former Joers Restaurant in downtown South Bend. He
served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Ronald was a
lifetime member of South Bend Elks BPOE #235, I-MEN's Association
and Sunnyside Presbyterian Church. He was a former member of the
Morris Park Country Club and the South Bend Country Club. His
interests included golf, snow skiing, dancing, watching his
grandchildren participate in sports, and working tirelessly at
his many endeavors.
Friends may call Wednesday, Sept. 3rd, from
4 to 8 p.m. in McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings,
Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Road). Services
will be Thursday, Sept. 4th, at 11:00 a.m. in Sunnyside
Presbyterian Church (corner of S. Frances and E. Washington
streets), South Bend, Rev. James Miller, pastor, officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services in the church.
Committal services will be 1:00 p.m. South Bend time (noon
Michigan City time) at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, IN.

Presbyterian Church, 115 S. Francis St., South Bend, IN 46617.
