Nancy Ann (Nunziata) Conti Jermano, 94, of Mishawaka, was born on October 6, 1911, and died peacefully on Christmas Eve day at 3:35 a.m. Her husband, Pasquale "Patsy," and a brother, Thomas DeMark, preceded her in death.
She is survived by a son, Sam (Teresa) Jermano; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Joseph) Jermano Miller; a great-grandson, Saverio Vincent Miller; her sister-in-law, Leona DeMark; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was born in Pennsylvania. Her father was killed in World War I and she, her mother and brother moved to be closer to family, living in Franklin, Pennsylvania, Youngstown, Ohio, and later, Cleveland, Ohio.
When Nancy was 16, her mother, Anna, remarried and the family moved to Mishawaka, Indiana. It was during the Depression and Nancy had to quit school to help support the family. She met the love of her life, "Patsy," and they married on June 30, 1933, in St. Monica Catholic Church, and spent 55 years together. Nancy was one of the few women in her Italian neighborhood who spoke English and could drive a car. So she spent many hours helping in any way she could, from going to school with Italian moms to talk to teachers, to driving friends to doctor's appointments. She willingly provided transportation for the elderly. She was a dear friend and loved by all. She loved children and after her husband passed away in 1987 she volunteered as a kindergarten aide for several years at St. Monica's. The students loved when "Grandma Nancy" would come to volunteer. She was a member of the DiLoreto Auxiliary and the St. Monica Rosary Society.
