SOUTH BEND - Raphael E. "Rachel" Jelinski, 89, of South Bend, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN. She was born on December 2, 1918, in Waarschoot, Belgium, to the late Noel and Mary Louise (DeVusser) Van Durmen.

On August 8, 1964, Rachel married Ervin S. Jelinski, who preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1986. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Julian and George. She is survived by her children, Diana (William) Sorukas of South Bend and Elizabeth (Steven) Hawn of Mishawaka, June Ann (Gerald) Langner of Carmel, IN, Rosemarie (Richard) Klosowski of South Bend, Thomas Andries of Mishawaka and Gregory (Pat) Andries of Colorado Springs, CO; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Edward Van Durmen of Mishawaka. Rachel was a journalist with the Mishawaka Enterprise-Record.

Cremation will take place with a committal service at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, is assisting the family. Contributions in memory of Rachel may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
