SOUTH BEND - Irene E. Jankowski, 96, formerly of South Bend, IN and Sister Lakes, MI, died on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Holy Cross Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was born on January 2, 1912, to the late John and Anna (Kubisiak) Szymanski in South Bend, IN. Irene attended St. Joseph Academy and graduated from Central High School in South Bend.

On September 3, 1930, as Irene E. Szymanski, she married John R. Jankowski at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. He died in October 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Maryanne (John F.) Jackovitz of Monroeville, PA; her son, Ernest (Patricia) Jankowski, M.D. of South Bend, IN; nine grandchildren, Michele, Michael, Judith, Laura, Jeffrey, and Jennifer Jankowski and Jan, Julie, and Joyce Jackovitz; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Jankowski was a former member of Holy Maternity of Mary Catholic Church in Dowagiac, MI and St. Stanislaus Parish in South Bend, where she belonged to the Altar & Rosary Society. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Irene and John enjoyed spending winters in North Fort Myers, FL for many years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, in the Chapel at Holy Cross Care & Rehabilitation Center, followed by a visitation until 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN is handling arrangements.
