Jackowiak death draws probe

The South Bend Police Department is investigating the death of Louis L. Jackowiak, 62, of 57198 Alan Road, who died apparently of a heart attack Friday afternoon at Hook’s Drug Store, 4634 W. Western Ave.   He was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital at 2:12 p.m.   Authorities said employees of the Kmart store, 4850 W. Western Ave., reportedly saw Jackowiak taking some candy and a box of screws or nails from the store. An employee followed Jackowiak into the parking lot and into Hook’s drug store, where Jackowiak fell over and suffered the apparent heart attack. Police said his wallet contained more than $300.   Deputy St. Joseph County Coroner Dr. James McMeel also is investigating the incident, according to Capt. Charles Mahank. Mahank said police officers interviewed witnesses Saturday to get more details about the incident.   Jackowiak was a custodian for Washington and Clay High School. He was born on Dec. 16, 1922, in South Bend, and he had lived here all of his life.   On April 21, 1951, in South Bend, he married the former Lorraine J. Klimek, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Sue Kush of South Bend; a son Thomas R. of South Bend; a grandchild; and two sisters, Theresa Brumlow of Rapid City, S.D., and Evelyn Kovatch of South Bend.   Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Entombment will be in the Resurrection Gardens Mausoleum in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 58, of which he was a member. The parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. He was a member of American Legion Pulaski Post 357 and a veteran of World War II.
