SOUTH BEND - On Saturday afternoon, July 19, 2008, at 4:10 p.m., Darlyne
Hunter, 81, passed away after her courageous battle with
non-hodgkins lymphoma. She died in her home surrounded by her
loving family. She was born on August 26, 1926, to the union of
Marion Terryberry and William McClinton. Darlyne grew up
in a small town on the Mississippi River in southern Illinois
named Oquawka. She graduated from John Marshall High School in
Chicago. In the fall of 1944 she joined her sister, Geraldine
Swann, for a visit to Geraldine's husband in a military hospital
in Galesburg, IL. She was encouraged to visit with a soldier in
the bed next to her brother-in-law, and this is how she met the
love of her life, Chet Hunter. Chet had served his country during
World War II and was wounded in action on Anzio Beach, Italy. At
the age of 18,
Darlyne fell madly in love and she and Chet
were married in her hometown on November 25, 1944. They moved to
Van Wert, OH, which was Chet's hometown. It was there that their
first daughter, Candy, was born. They moved to South Bend in 1947
and continued to grow their family. This is where three more
daughters, Patricia, Debra and Cherie, were born. Darlyne was
preceded in death by her parents, Mabel Marion and William
McClinton; her brother-in-law, E. Taylor Swann; her first
granddaughter, Amy Lynn Jurgenson on August 4, 1994; and her
son-in-law, David Newall on March 30, 2007. Darlyne is survived
by her loving husband of 63 years, Chester L. Hunter; and their
four daughters, Candy (Donald) Jurgenson of Mishawaka,
Patricia (Robert) Emerick of Racine, WI, Debra Hunter Newall
of Tinley Park, IL, and Cherie (Barry) Toth of South Bend.
She is also survived by six grandchildren, David (Rachel)
Emerick, Dr. April (Dr. Michael) Ouwenga, Darlyne (Jeff) Holle,
Brandon (Jenny) Hunter, Caitlin Hunter and Kyle Hunter;
five great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Mark, Shannon, Lily and
Cameron; and her sister, Geraldine Swann of Tucson, AZ.
Darlyne and Chet loved to travel and visited all 50 states. They
also went to Europe several times. They loved Notre Dame football
and followed the Irish to Ireland and Hawaii to cheer them on.
She was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan and wanted to live long
enough to see them win the series! She was a homemaker most of
her life and also retired from the City of South Bend after she
became disabled with rheumatoid arthritis. Darlyne also cared for
her mother in her later years. She and Chet renewed their
marriage vows at St. Jude Catholic Church on their 50th wedding
anniversary. She will be greatly missed by family, friends, and
her cat, Amber. The family would like to thank Dr. Jose Bufill
and his staff, the staff at 10 South at Memorial Hospital, and
The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care of South Bend. You
were the best wife, mom and friend. We will always love you and
like the song from your generation, "I'll Be Seeing You."
Please give the rest of our Heavenly family a hug...they are
waiting for you.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, in St. Jude Catholic
Church, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at
Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family
from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 21st, in the Palmer Funeral
Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend.
