MISHAWAKA - Thomas F. Hums, 76, passed away at 4:47 p.m. Friday,
April 2, 2010, at his winter home in Oro Valley, AZ. He was born
November 6, 1933, in Mishawaka, IN, to the late Fred J. and Rose
B. Hums. Also preceding him in death were brothers, James and
William Hums. He was married to Donna J. Wurst at St. Bavo's
Catholic Church, Mishawaka, IN, on May 7, 1960. She survives with
a son, Jeffery W. Hums of Tucson, AZ, and a daughter, Jenifer J.
Bender, and grandsons, Austin and Blake of Fishers, IN. Also
surviving are his sister, Mary Kay Bogan, of Mishawaka, and many
nieces and nephews. Tom was a graduate of Mishawaka High School
and Purdue University with a degree in chemical engineering. He
was employed at Ashland Oil and Refining Company in Kentucky
before entering the Navy in the fall of 1955 and served on the
U.S.S. Renshaw in the Pacific during the Korean Conflict. In 1957
Tom was employed at Mishawaka Building & Loan (now Mutual
Bank) and served as president and CEO from 1972 until his
retirement in 1995. He continued to serve on the Board of
Directors and as chairman of the board from 1997 to 2005. In
Indiana, Tom was chairman of the Mishawaka Plan Commission,
president of the Board of Zoning Appeals, president of the St.
Joseph Hospital Foundation Board, president of the Mishawaka
Lions Club and chairman of the Credit Bureau. He also served on
the Mishawaka St. Joseph Hospital Foundation Board and the
Council for Developmentally Disabled Children of St. Joseph
County. Tom was an active member of Queen of Peace Catholic
Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. His love of the
outdoors led to gardening, fishing, skiing, running 5K and 10K
races, and hiking. After retiring, Tom spent winters in Arizona
hiking the mountain trails. He was a member of the Southern
Arizona Hiking Club and hiked his 200th peak in May 2009. Tom was
interested in sharing his knowledge of sports with his children
and their friends by teaching them how to water and snow ski and
coaching little league teams in Indiana. When in Arizona he
mentored and tutored boys at Catalina Mountain School, a secure
care facility for juvenile offenders. A funeral Mass will be held
at Santa Catalina Catholic Church in Tucson on Thursday, April 8,
2010, at 10:45 a.m. Friends may pay their respects at the church
after 10:15 a.m. prior to the funeral Mass. A memorial Mass will
be celebrated at a later date at Queen of Peace Catholic Church
in Mishawaka, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Southern Arizona Hiking Club, Casa de la Luz, Tucson, AZ; to The
Res, Mishawaka, IN; or to Queen of Peace Catholic School,
