South Bend-Elva Estella Humphrey, 92, of St. Joseph's Care Center-West, formerly of 513 S. Ironwood Drive, died at 5:45 pm Tuesday in the nursing home. Mrs. Humphrey was a former crossing guard for the South Bend Police Department at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Ironwood Drive. She was born July 20, 1903, in Kankakee, Ill., and had lived in South Bend most of her life. On Nov. 6, 1923, in South Bend, as Elva E. Corle, she married Clifford A. Humphrey. He died Dec. 19, 1946. She is survived by a niece Phyllis White of Mishawaka; four great-grandnieces and nephews; and three great-great-nephews. A daughter, Patricia Lou Humphrey, died April 27, 1987. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Services will be at 11 am Friday in Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
