MISHAWAKA - Ellen Howland, 89, of Mishawaka, passed away
early Saturday morning, June 30, 2007, in her home. Ellen was
born April 10, 1918, in Morgantown, North Carolina. She had lived
in North Carolina until moving to Indiana in 1950, eventually
settling in Mishawaka.
On July 18, 1964, in South Bend, Ellen
married Richard J. Howland and they made Mishawaka their home.
Ellen was primarily a homemaker and worked at one time at
Northside Laundry on Cedar Street in Mishawaka. She enjoyed
flower gardening, collecting angels, cooking and baking, and, in
her younger days, sewing. Ellen was especially fond of her
grandchildren. Ellen's surviving family includes her husband of
nearly 43 years, Richard Howland Sr.; a son, Bob (Mary) Adkins
of Osceola; two stepsons, Richard (Dottie) Howland Jr. of South
Bend and Larry (Sheri) Howland of Mishawaka; a stepdaughter,
Mariann (Harry) McPhail of Osceola; 13 grandchildren, 23
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a
number of nieces and nephews. Ellen was preceded in death by a
son, Gene Adkins; a stepson, Kenny Howland; a granddaughter,
Robbie Ellen Adkins; a grandson, Greg Adkins; and all of her
brothers and sisters.
Friends may spend time with Ellen's family on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. Third Street, Mishawaka. Services will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Jeff Marshall officiating. Entombment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Contributions in Ellen's memory may be made to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care. Envelopes are available in the funeral home.
