SOUTH BEND - A lifelong South Bend resident, Harold I.
Housewerth, 88, passed away at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 4, in
Golden Living Center-Fountainview, Mishawaka. He was born
November 26, 1919, in South Bend, to Ernest and Hazel Irene (Fisher)
Housewerth, and graduated in 1937 from Woodrow Wilson High
School. He graduated from Acme School of Die Design Engineering
in 1940. He answered the call of duty to his country during WWII,
serving in the U.S. Navy as a Specialist X E.D. (Engineering
Draftsman) in the Navy Dept. in Washington, D.C., for two years.
He worked on research and development on underwater artillery and
torpedo devices. On June 21, 1941, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church,
Woodland, IN, he was united in marriage to Dolores M. Fox.
They have enjoyed 67 years of marriage. He is survived by his
loving wife, Dolores; his daughter, Janet Housewerth of Nyack,
NY; a nephew and his wife, Dennis and Barbara Unrue of
Bremen. Mr. Housewerth retired in 1987 from Ace Tool Engineering
and Huckins Tool & Die Co.
Harold loved to play his trombone in the
South Bend Shrine Club Brass Band. He was interested in set
construction and acting with the Presbyterian Players and the
Theater Dept. at Indiana University of South Bend. He designed
and built the home he and Dolores have lived in for many years.
He was also an avid photographer and had a dark room to develop
his own pictures. Mr. Housewerth was a member of Holy Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran Church on Mayflower Road, South Bend. He was
a 50-year member and Past Master of Terre Coupee Lodge #204
F&AM, New Carlisle, 50-year member of Orak Temple, Shriners
of North America, past officer and 50-year member of South Bend
York Rite-Chapter, Council and Commandery, 50-year member of the
Order of Eastern Star Valley Chapter #738, a 50-year member of
South Bend Royal Arch Masons #29, 50-year member of Elkhart Royal
Arch Masons #101, 50-year member of White Shrine of Jerusalem and
Past Watchman of Shepherds, and a 50-year member of South Bend
Commandery #13 Knights Templar. He was also a member of Royal
Order of Scotland, former Avalon Grotto, South Bend Shrine Club,
Four Lakes Country Club, South Bend Court #11 Order of Amaranth,
American Legion Post 161, Mishawaka, South Bend Lions Club,
Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and Past Prior of Knights of
the York Cross of Honour.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Timothy Knauff and Rev. Russell Snyder will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Bremen Cemetery, Bremen, IN. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. today in the funeral home, where members of Terre Coupee Lodge #204, F.&AM, will conduct a Masonic memorial service at 7 p.m. Contributions in memory of Harold I.
