Jonathan W. Housand of 1438 E. Fourth Street, Mishawaka, Ind., died after an extended illness on Friday, August 7, at Holy Cross Care Center in South Bend, Ind.
Mr. Housand was born on March 10, 1913, in Mooresville, Ind. He was a 1933 graduate of Mishawaka High School.
On Jan. 11, 1936, he married Marie J. Doll, who survives.
He is also survived by five daughters, Barbara Theobald of Spring, Texas, Janet Eggleston and Cheryl Hickle of Mishawaka, Mary Jo Tomasik and Kathleen Marien of Granger, Ind.; two sons, Jonathan, Jr. of Elkhart, Ind. and Michael of Mishawaka; and by a sister, Maxine Stoehr of Mishawaka. He was the proud grandfather of 29 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was retired from Uniroyal in Mishawaka in 1963 after 40 years of service. He was then employed by A. Baker and Co. in South Bend until his final retirement in 1968.
Mr. Housand was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Mishawaka, Council 1878 of the Knights of Columbus, member and past president of the Mishawaka Kiwanis Club and the city of Mishawaka Charitable Contributions Commission. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who would talk proudly at great length to anyone about the accomplishments, great or small, of his wife, children and grandchildren. An avid sport enthusiast, he played, coached and officiated youth and adult baseball, softball and basketball for a good part of his life.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.
The funeral will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The Rev. Robert Yast will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
