Steve J. Horvath (March 10, 1915 - Oct. 8,
2006)
Steve J. Horvath, 91, died in the Saint
Joseph Medical Center on October 8, 2006, after a brief illness
He was born on March 10, 1915, to the late
Frank and Rose (Jagedich) Horvath in South
Bend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene (Maculski),
who died in 2002; his sister, Rose Vertesch; and his
brother, Frank Horvath. He married Irene on April 20, 1940. He
was a resident of St. Paul's Retirement Community and of Birch Lake
in Michigan
Steve graduated from Riley High School,
and later became a machine tool designer at South Bend Lathe. He
then served as a South Bend firefighter for 20 years. He was
active as a teacher of fire prevention in the schools and was
very involved in water and boat safety with the local Red Cross.
He helped many area residents, young and old, learn to enjoy
swimming and boating. He was a coach of the South Bend Marlins
swim team when it first began. He also was known for his artistic
ability and his taxidermy work. After retiring from the fire
department, he served as a county court bailiff and as an aquatic
director at the YMCA
He is survived by his three daughters,
Suellen (Richard) Webster of Trafalgar, Ind., Jacquelyn
(William) Falkenburg of New Your City and Pamela (Alan) VanHuffel
of South Bend. He is loved and will be missed by seven
grandchildren, Tami Hogan and Steve Hogan of Indianapolis,
Ind., Andrea (John) DeGeeter of Mishawaka, Michele (Steve)
Talos of South Bend, Mark (Kim) VanHuffel of Fortville, Ind.,
Jennifer (Brian) Bishop of South Bend and David (Alethea) Marks
of New York City. He was blessed with 10 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by a sister, Helen Caenepeel of South
Bend
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday, Oct. 14, in St. Matthew Cathedral Church on Miami
Street in South Bend. The family will greet friends one hour
before the memorial service in the church. A luncheon will follow
the service in the church basement
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, (St. Matthew
Conference), c/o St. Matthew Cathedral Church
