SOUTH BEND - Hedwige "Hedy" Rose Horvath, 86,
passed away at 12:30 pm Wednesday, November 19, 2008 in Caring
Junction. Hedy was born on June 17, 1922 in South Bend to John
and Louise (Gleichweit) Gruber. She was employed by
Ball Band, Bike Webb, Wyman's and retired from the St. Joseph
County Auditors Office. Mrs. Horvath was a member of St. Matthew
Cathedral and its Rosary Society. She was an accomplished
seamstress and quilter and loved to bake and cook. On June 13,
1942 in South Bend as Hedwige Gruber she married Nicholas
Horvath. He died on June 8, 1993. She was also preceded in death
by 4 sisters Cecelia Prestzwor, Theresa Solmos,
Louise Niemann, and Mary Haas; and 2 brothers John
Gruber and Frank Gruber. Surviving are 3 sons Nicholas J. (Mary
Kay) Horvath of Shoreview, MN. Anthony J. Horvath of Kansas City,
MO, and Kenneth M. (Nancy) Horvath of South Bend; 3 grandchildren
Nicholas (Sheree) Horvath of Melbourne, Australia, Catherine
Horvath and Hannah Rose Horvath both of South Bend; a sister
Margaret (Joseph) Redling of South Bend and many nieces
and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Saturday, November 22, 2008 in St. Matthew Cathedral. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4-8 Friday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Cathedral.
