James Albert Horning

James A. Horning, 73, of South Bend, Ind., beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 18, after an illness.

Mr. Horning was born on Oct. 25, 1927, in South Bend, and remained a lifelong resident. He was a former Bendix Corporation employee from 1948-1971. During his tenure with the Bendix Corporation he received the "Top Achievement Award," Defense Contract Administrative Services for Zero Defects Program, 1969 (1st and highest award).

From 1971 through 1976 he was executive director of Junior Achievement, Inc., in South Bend. During this time he received several regional and national awards including the Golden Globe Award for 1973, 1974 and 1975, which is a national record. In 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975 respectively, he received the National Freedom Foundation Award. In 1973 he was awarded for "Best Locally Produced Television Show in America."

Mr. Horning attended Roosevelt Military Academy, Aledo, Ill., and graduated from Central High School, South Bend. He attended Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind.

In 1961 James married Ann, his wife of 39 years, who survives him. During his lifetime James A. Horning was a member of the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Suggestion Systems. In 1976 he started his own business, Industrial Technologies, which he maintained until his recent decline due to illness.

James A. Horning was preceded in death by his parents, John A. and Bertha C. Horning, and his youngest brother, John A. Horning.

He is survived by his wife Ann, and seven children, Michael (Penni) Horning of Wichita, Kan., Kathy Horning of Bristol, Ind., Michaeleen (Billy) Pennington of Moore, Okla., Patricia (David) DeGolier of Goshen, Ind., Mark Thomas Poehler of South Bend, James A. Horning II of South Bend and Laura (Jeff) Long of Mishawaka, Ind. Mr. Horning has 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Donald N. (Irene) Horning of South Bend; and four sisters, Mary (Walter) Fields of South Bend, Betty Crosiar of South Bend, Sue Beliveau of Florida and Mary Mrozek of Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, in the KANIEWSKI Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home.
