SOUTH BEND - Ralph L. Horner, 90, of South Bend, passed
away at 4:25 p.m. Friday, April 18, in Bremen Health Care Center
after an extended illness. Mr. Horner was born on January 30,
1918, in Valparaiso, IN, and had resided in the South Bend area
since 1940.
On February 14, 1942, in South Bend, he
married the former Donella J. Rogers, who preceded him in
death on December 2, 2007. Ralph is survived by two sons, Ryan E.
Horner of Walkerton, IN, and Scott L. (Mary Ann) Horner of
Lakeville, IN. Also surviving are five grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren, whom he loved and cherished. Mr. Horner was
a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who always placed his
family first. He will be sadly missed by a loving family and all
who had the opportunity to know him during his life journey.
Ralph was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on CVE-43 Aircraft
Carrier as a machinist mate. He was very proud to have served his
country. He loved flying, and was a handyman who could fix
anything. He often stated: "There is nothing that cannot
be repaired." Ralph was a 1937 graduate of Valparaiso
High School. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, PLEASE
make all memorial contributions to the Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN
46637.
Visitation hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m.
Monday, April 21, in Hanley & Sons "Southwest
Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana
23, South Bend. Funeral services will be private on Tuesday,
April 22, at Sumption Prairie Cemetery. The HANLEY & Sons
"Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements
and services and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt
prayers to the Horner family.
