Lt. Col. John P. Horan, 77, of South
Bend, Ind., died at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in Hospice House,
Roseland, Ind. He was born on Oct. 3, 1919, to John and Carrie (Mays)
Horan in Bartlesville, Okla. He lived in the Michiana area since
1946.
In 1942 he married Genevieve (Jean) Morgan,
who preceded him in death on July 6, 1980. He then married
Jeanette Childress, who survives. Lt. Col. Horan is also survived
by a daughter, Jean Badry of Alexander City, Ala.; one
son, John P. Horan, Jr. of Marathon, Fla.; two stepdaughters,
Linda Pluta of Durham, N.C. and Patricia Childress
of Okemos, Mich.; three grandchildren, Cory J. Horan, and
Jennifer and Gregor Badry; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie and
Nicholas Pluta; and one step-great-granddaughter, Erin Ravenscroft.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, James
''Barney'' Horan; a grandson, Ryan Horan; and a brother, Robert
Horan.
Mr. Horan graduated from Texas A & M
University, and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He
retired from the Army Reserves as a Lt. Colonel, Oct. 3, 1979. He
retired from General Electric as parts manager, after 27 years
service, in 1981. He was a member of First United Methodist
Church, U.S. Power Squadron, Retired Officers' Association, Moose
Lodge 58, and American Legion Post 50.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11
a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N.
William St., with Dr. Ellwood K. Smith officiating. Burial will
follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m.
Sunday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to
Hospice of St. Joseph County or the U.S. Power Squadron
Educational Fund.
