SOUTH BEND - Colleen Ellen Dhoore Holmes, 64, of Massanutten,
Virginia, formerly of South Bend, passed away on Thursday, March
4, 2010, in her residence. Ms. Holmes was born on Nov. 26, 1945,
in South Bend, and was a daughter of the late Earl and surviving
Shirley Listek Dhoore. Colleen's long career as an import and
export administrator included work in the Washington, D.C., area
and in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia for Wampler Foods, now
known as Pilgrim's Pride, until her retirement. Colleen had a big
heart and was well-known as an animal and bird lover. She bred
and raised many exotic birds. In addition to her mother, Ms.
Holmes is survived by her son, Daryl Zernick of Dallas, TX; her
brother, Greg (Gail) Dhoore of South Bend; two sisters, Judi
Poelvoorde of South Bend and Jan (Mark) Sowers of Memphis TN;
several aunts and uncles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Colleen had many friends from Hawaii to the Tidewater area of
Virginia. She will be especially missed by her close friends in
Virginia, Bobbie Rae Monger, Louise Ward and neighbor of 17
years, Lauren Jones, and by her "Little sisters,"
Alicia and Carmella Perez, and two birds, Ruffles and Johnny Reb.
A celebration of her life with a private remembrance service will
be held by her loving family at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisonburg/Rockingham
S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 413, Harrisonburg, VA 22803; or to St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis,
