Herman J. Hirl, 90, of South Bend,
Ind., passed away of natural causes at 12:45 a.m. on Saturday,
March 11, in Fountainview Place, Mishawaka, Ind. He was born on
Aug. 11, 1909 in South Bend, the son of Joseph L. and Mary (Schneider)
Hirl. During his life he worked for Studebaker, Holy Cross Grade
School and the University of Notre Dame's ACC as a sign painter
where he retired on July 1, 1984.
On May 5, 1945, in South Bend, he married
Claira M. Aufschalger, who preceded him in death on Nov. 10,
1986. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes B. Warner,
Joan Hoffman, and Maria Borror; and by a brother,
Joseph Hirl. He is survived by two children: a daughter, Annette
Hirl and a son, Kevin J. Hirl, both of South Bend; and by two
special foster grandchildren, Lisa Henry of Logansport,
Ind., and Matthew Cook of South Bend.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8
p.m. today, March 13 at the MCGANN FUNERAL HOME, University Area
Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend. A Rosary service will be
held at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home. Funeral services will
be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, in Holy Cross Catholic
Church, where he was a member. Burial will be in the Highland
Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Holy
