MISS HILLIER DIES AT AGE 86
Home Economis School Leader Succumbs
Miss Ada A. Hillier, 86, who introduced and
was director of home economics in South Bend School City for 40
years died at 7:30 am today in Memorial Hospital after an illness
of four weeks.
Miss Hillier, who lived at 805 W. Colfax
Ave. retired in 1942. During her active career she compiled a
textbook on cooking and household hints which has run into many
editions.
She also had charge of women's food work in
South Bend during World Wars I and II.
Born in 1873
Miss Hillier was born in south Bend, Jan. 5,
1873, daughter of Samuel A. and Martha E. Hillier, pioneer
residents.
She was also a graduate of Armour Institute.
She held B.S. and M. S. degrees from Teachers' College, Columbia
University, N.Y. and she spent one year studying in a private
school in Rome, Italy.
Funeral at 11 a.m. Monday
She was a member of the First Methodist
Church and a former member of the Progress Club. she also was
affiliated with the American Home Economics Assn.; the Indiana
Home Economics Assn; the Woman's College Club, and the American
Assn. of University Women.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Carl W. Ginz of
South Bend, and two brothers, Forest Hillier of South Bend, and
Glen Hillier of Long Beach, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs.
Hiram Kreighbaum of South Bend, and a brother Samuel D. Hillier
of Mishawaka.
Friends may call after noon Sunday at the Russell Funeral Home until time for services there at 11 a.m. Monday. Rev. Kenneth R. Hemphill pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
