SOUTH BEND - Virgie M. Hiles, 67, of South Bend died at
11:25 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2008 in St. Joseph Regional
Medical Center following an illness. Mrs. Hiles was born
September 14, 1941 in Mt. Auburn, IL to Clarence E. and Mary (McAntire)
Howard and had lived in South Bend since 1960 coming from Butler,
IL. In 1958 in Ft. Wayne, IN as Virgie M. Howard she
married G. Richard Hiles who survives. Also surviving are a son,
James C. Hiles of South Bend; one grandson, Richard E. Hiles; her
mother, Mary Howard of Poplar Bluff, MO; three sisters, Barbara
(Keith) Sellers of Canyon City, CO and Rose Byrd
and Kathy Reed both of Poplar Bluff; and two brothers,
George R. Howard of Coffeen, IL and Ernest L. (Barbara) Howard of
Gillespie, IL. She was preceded in death by her father Clarence
E. Howard and a sister, Elenore R. Spires. Mrs. Hiles had
been employed at the former Osteopathic Hospital in South Bend as
a lab technician. She was a very accomplished archer and was a
champion in many tournaments during her life. She was also an
excellent horseback rider. Virgie also loved reading and sewing
for her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and
friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 29th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. with Rev. Donald R. Francis officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may call in the funeral home from noon until the time of service at 2 p.m.
