SOUTH BEND - Dr. John O. Hildebrand, former president of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority, died today in St. Vincent's Hospital, Indianapolis. Dr. Hildebrand, 73, of Robin Hood Lane, died at 5:35 a.m. Dr. Hildebrand also had served as secretary of the four-member board that governs Bendix Field at Michiana Regional Transportation Center. A private plane enthusiast, Dr. Hildebrand was a veteran member of the ''Flying Physicians,'' a national club of physician-fliers. He also served as a designated examiner for the Federal Aviation Administraiton. Dr. Hildebrand actively supported plans for the expansion of the airport. He was especially interested in enlarging the airport for private plane pilots. Dr. Hildebrand retired as a family practice physician. He was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Huntington, Ind., and lived in South Bend most of his life.
On Aug. 5, 1949, in South Bend, he married Victoria Capatina. She survives with four daughters, Jacqueline Hildebrand, Karen Pugliese and Kathy Hildebrand, all of California, and Dr. Kristine Courtney of Carmel, Ind.; three grandsons; a stepmother, Lucille Hildebrand of Wisconsin; two sisters, Virginia Georgi of South Bend and Gladys Borders of St. Louis; and a brother, Dr. William L. of Indianapolis. He was a veteran of World War II serving the Army Medical Corps.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive. Entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Hospital Foundation or American Cancer Society.

Hildebrand, M.D., 73, of Robin Hood Lane, who died at 5:35 a.m. Thursday in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis, of natural causes, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive. Entombment will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Dr. Hildebrand graduated from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., and the Indiana University Medical School. He was a member of South Bend Country Club, Elks Lodge 235, Masonic Lodge 45, South Bend Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend and American Academy of Family Physicians and was president and treasurer of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority.
