SOUTH BEND - Lawrence John Higgins, 71, of South Bend,
passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, in Hospice House, South
Bend. He was born on October 23, 1936, in Wamego, KS, to the late
James and Ruth (Rosencrantz) Higgins. He moved to South
Bend and lived most of his life in this area. On November 28,
1968, in Bangkok, Thailand, he married Priscilla "Meg" Pangilinan.
Along with his wife of 40 years, he is survived by three
daughters, Sheila Markley of MT, Sharon Adams of
Phoenix, AZ, and Katherine Higgins of Indianapolis, IN; a son,
Gerald (Rosalia) Higgins of South Bend; four grandchildren,
Anastasia, Alexis, Spencer and Sydney Higgins; and by two
brothers, James Edmond (Carolyn) Higgins of New Carlisle, IN, and
Thomas Higgins of South Bend. Along with his parents, he was
preceded in death by a sister, Marion Lentine. In the late
1960s he worked overseas as an electronic military contractor.
Lawrence owned Color City T.V. in Mishawaka for 16 years in
appliance sales and repair. He was a electrician for seven years
for IBEW Local 153. He retired from the Electrical Workers Union
in 2001. He was a Ham Radio operator N9DX, and a member of the
Michiana Computer Club, the Electrical Workers Union Local 153,
and was affiliated with the Northwest United Methodist Church.
Lawrence graduated from Saint Joseph High School in 1954,
attended Purdue University from 1954 to 1956, and graduated from
the University of Maryland in 1970 with a B.A. in Finance.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Friday, October 24, 2008, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services for Lawrence will be held at 11 AM Saturday, October 25, 2008, in the funeral home, with entombment to follow at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend.
